Covington’s 2013 Closes With Tough Luck

PETERSEN MEDIA- Taking on the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour at the Cocopah Speedway to close out his 2013 season, Matt Covington show some speed on both night’s of action, but bad luck got the best of him.

“It was one of those weekends,” Covington said. “We were plenty fast both night’s but had some gremlins on both nights.”

Kicking his season finale weekend off on Friday night, Covington lined his T&L Foundry/Triple X Chassis/Winters backed entry up in the third row of his heat race.

With his elbows up, the Glenpool, OK driver carved through the field with precision, and won the heat race going away, putting him in the redraw, where he pulled the eighth pill.

Lining up eighth in the feature event Covington held his own, as he battled inside a tight knit top-ten group of cars.

At the halfway point, Covington was working on taking over the fifth spot when a rock got into his radiator, ultimately leading to his engine blowing up, and rear end blowing up as the car locked up when the engine went.

Opting to pull down a spare car for Saturday’s race that had a fresh engine and fresh rear end already installed and ready to race, Covington drew a very high pill for his heat race, and lined the Brodix/C.G. Marti Company/Factor 1 Racing No. 95 machine up in the eight spot.

With a plug wire getting knocked off in the heat, Covington’s entry lost power, but he stayed on the track, and scored a sixth place finish, putting him sixth in one of the twin B main events.

Fighting his way up to the third spot, Covington earned the finale ticket to the feature event, and lined up in the 21st spot, as he was in the first B.

With the preferred line right around the bottom of the speedway, Covington scratched and clawed his way up to the 12th spot, when he began to lose brakes, and slowly slipped back through the field, as it became tough to pedal the bottom of the speedway.

When the checkered flag flew, Covington closed his season with a 18th place finish.

“From losing an engine and rear end on Friday, to brakes on Saturday it was a long weekend,” Covington said. “We were a top five car for sure on Friday, and I think we had a top 10 car on Saturday, but as it goes with racing, bad luck happens. I just want to thank everyone for all of their support this year.”

Matt and his Covington Racing team would like to thank T&L Foundry, Triple X Chassis, Winters, Brodix, C.G. Martin Company, Factor 1 Racing, All-Star Performance, Outlaw Wings, Pro Shocks, DMI Components, Keizer Wheels, ButlerBuilt, Simpson Race Products, GME Steering, Wesmar Racing Engines, Bob Hurley RV, Eaton Industrial, Maxwell Industries, and Schoenfeld Headers for their support in 2013.
