Covington Earns A Solid 2nd Place Finish
Following a Friday night rainout at Boyd Raceway, Matt Covington and the Oil Medics ASCS Lone Star Region salvaged the planned weekend double with a Saturday night stand at Abilene Speedway.
With the only penned event at Abilene’s ¼ mle bullring, Matt Covington was hoping for a solid run to maintain or extend his Lonestar point lead. After starting towards the back of the heat, Matt would charge up to 2nd and gain enough passing points to postition himself in the redraw. Matt drew the 8th starting position for the feature and had his work cut out for him.
Kolt Walker the Kermit, Texas native had company in 4th row starter Matt Covington by lap 15. The defending Lone Star Champ and current Lone Star point leader Covington worked on Kolt's back bumber as the track became very slick and one groove on the bottom. Covington would have to settled for a runner up finish that enhanced his Lone Star point lead as the series’ nears the halfway point of the season. El Paso’s John Carney II earned show position honors and the Bishop’s Racing Components Hard Charger Award with his drive from 14th to third.
New Mexico’s Kyle McCutcheon and Dale Wester completed the top five finishing order.
Claud Estes, Kolt Walker, and Patrick Stasa each earned heat race wins over the 16 car field.
