Matt Covington

Covington wins Lucas Oil ASCS race at Las Cruces!

Covington Motorsports- One night after securing a 4th place lock-in position on a sticky, hooked up race track, Matt Covington took on some of the best sprint car drivers in the country and charged out front to wire the field from start to finish. He picked up the ASCS National win on a extremely slick Southern New Mexico Speedway, in his Oilfield Equipment, Triple-X chassis, Wesmar powered machine.

On Friday Matt would charge from dead last to fourth on a locked down race track in his heat to secure a re-draw. Matt was able to take advantage of the 6th starting position in the main and come home 4th in Friday’s preliminary feature to lock-in and set the stage for a solid run on Saturday.

With four cars being locked into Saturday's feature from the previous night, Matt was able to grab the pole position in the re-draw and start beside Johnny Herrera for the Saturday finale.

Heavy winds had caused the track to completely slick off, and track officials opted to rip up the track in hopes of creating a race-able surface for the feature.

The work did not go un noticed and the track stayed slick and racy for most of the event until about 13 laps from the end when it started to take rubber.

At the drop of the green Matt was able to get the jump on the start and set sail on the high side to take control of the feature early on.

The feature would be plagued with a few cautions throughout the event. Matt was able to open up a lead on a couple occasions, but with the cautions and lap traffic found himself having to fight hard to defend the top spot with little breathing room throughout most of the race.

As the checkers flew Matt would bring home the victory with Brady Bacon crossing the strip a close 2nd, alongside the “King” Steve Kinser in 3rd.

Up next for Matt and new crew chief David Chappell is the Western World Finals presented by Kronik Energy in Tucson, AZ to close out the 2011 Lucas Oil ASCS National tour races and season for Matt. Practice will be on Wednesday, November 16th, with racing action on the 17th, and 18th, with the finals taking over the USA Raceway on Saturday the 19th.

Martin Company, Factor 1 Racing, Outlaw Wings, Pro Shocks, BR Motorsports, DMI Components, Keizer Wheels, Butler Built Race Seats, Simpson Race Products, GME Steering, Wesmar Racing Engines and Schoenfeld Headers for their continued help and support. Without their partnership and support the championship and wins this season would not have been possible and the 2011 campaign would of been a challenge and difficult task to complete.
